Q: How efficient are the LED lamps?
A: Over 80% of the power applied to a LED light source is converted to light. For an incandescent less than 5% of the power applied is converted to light. It is measured in LPW (lumens per watt). An A19 incandescent light bulb will range from 12 to 17 LPW. LED light sources will range from 80 to 150 LPW. Some recent technical improvements there are some at 180 LPW. The high LPW LED light sources cost more to produce. Thus LED sight sources use less energy than traditional lighting so will save on one’s electric bill.
Q: Can LED lamps be used in existing light fittings?
A: Most LED bulbs work in standard light sockets and can be easily fitted in the same way as any other bulb. Fittings generally are the same.
Q: Can I afford to change to LEDs?
A: Of course. LEDs are more expensive initially, but being more energy efficient than conventional lighting, energy consumption is much lower delivering substantial savings on your electricity bill. Because the illuminators are more robust and ‘lamp’ life is much longer, you will also save money on maintenance. Improved and more reliable lighting will enhance your site safety and security generally. Carbon emissions are much lower, so you’ll also be doing your bit for the environment.
